In the wake of a deadly attack on the Jewish community in Sydney, U.S. President Donald Trump called on nations worldwide to unite against Islamic extremism. Speaking at a Hanukkah event at the White House on Tuesday, Trump strongly condemned the attack and reassured the Jewish community of America’s unwavering support.
Deadly Attack at Bondi Beach
On Sunday evening, a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, Sydney, claimed 15 lives and injured more than 25 people. Australian authorities described the incident as an Islamic State (ISIS)-inspired terrorist attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the attackers, a father and son duo aged 50 and 24, were motivated by ISIS ideology. Police recovered an ISIS flag from the attackers’ vehicle. The father, identified as Sajid Akram, was shot dead, while the son, reportedly Naveed Akram, is receiving hospital treatment.
Trump Speaks Out
During his Hanukkah address, Trump said, “I want to take a moment to send love and prayers to my entire country, the people of Australia, and all those affected by this horrific anti-Jewish terrorist attack.” He extended condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured, noting that some were severely wounded.
The U.S. President further emphasized that all nations must stand together against the forces of radical Islamic terrorism, underscoring the need for global unity in combating extremism. He also pledged continued and unwavering support to Jewish communities worldwide.
Global Response and Security Concerns
Australian authorities noted that the attack was designed to instill fear within the Jewish community. The incident has reignited discussions on security measures for minority communities and international cooperation against terrorism.
