Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand – In a shocking incident highlighting the growing human-wildlife conflict in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions, a 42-year-old woman was mauled to death by a wild bear while working alone in her field. The tragic attack occurred in Boragaon’s Kampa Tok area under Munsiyari tehsil, spreading fear and grief throughout the village.
According to reports, the victim, identified as Basanti Devi, wife of Trilok Singh, was working in her field when a bear suddenly emerged from the nearby forest and launched a brutal attack. Hearing her screams, nearby villagers rushed to the spot and managed to drive the animal away by shouting and making noise. Unfortunately, Basanti Devi had already sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.
Woman Lived Alone in the Village
Revenue police and forest officials were immediately informed. Revenue officer Basant Lohani stated that the deceased lived alone in the village, while her husband and children reside in Haldwani. Station In-charge Mangal Singh confirmed that the body has been taken into custody for necessary legal formalities.
Rising Human-Wildlife Conflict in Hills
This tragic event once again exposes the alarming rise in wild animal attacks in Uttarakhand’s rural areas. Bears, leopards, and other wild creatures frequently stray into human settlements, creating panic and loss of life. Local residents have demanded that the forest department and administration take immediate measures to control the movement of wild animals near populated areas.
Villagers have also urged the government to provide adequate financial assistance to the victim’s family and ensure stronger wildlife management to prevent such incidents in the future.
