Mumbai News: After ‘Atal Setu’ Over the Sea, Mumbai to Get India’s Longest Double-Decker Flyover — A 21-Km Engineering Marvel

Mumbai: After creating history with the Atal Setu sea bridge and the Coastal Road, Mumbai is now gearing up for yet another major infrastructure milestone. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled plans to construct India’s longest double-decker flyover, which will stretch 21 kilometers — connecting Navi Mumbai to Bhiwandi through Dombivli and Kalyan.

According to MMRDA, the proposed flyover will start from Shil Phata on NH-48 and end at Ranjnoli Junction on NH-160, passing through key suburban hubs. Once completed, it will significantly ease traffic congestion and transform travel across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

A Game-Changing Infrastructure Boost

The flyover will feature a double-decker design, with the upper deck housing metro tracks and the lower deck carrying four-lane vehicular traffic. It will seamlessly integrate with major ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, turning MMR into a model for multimodal connectivity.

An MMRDA official stated, “We are in the process of appointing a consultant to prepare the detailed project report (DPR). The consultant will also handle the bidding process and oversee project implementation.”

Currently, Hyderabad’s 11-km Visvesvaraya Flyover holds the title of India’s longest flyover, while the 165-km Yamuna Expressway is the country’s longest elevated road. Once completed, Mumbai’s 21-km structure will set a new national record.

Travel Time to Shrink to Minutes

Once operational, the new flyover will cut travel time between Navi Mumbai and Bhiwandi drastically — reducing a 32-kilometer journey to just a few minutes. The project is being designed keeping in mind the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is scheduled to see its first flight take off on December 15.

Integration with Metro and Bullet Train Corridors

The upper deck of the flyover will accommodate three metro lines:

  • Metro 5: Bhiwandi to Kalyan (Durgadi Fort–Ranjnoli Junction)
  • Metro 12: Kalyan to Taloja (Kalyan APMC–Runwal Junction)
  • Metro 14: Kanjurmarg to Badlapur (Shil Phata–Katainaka)

MMRDA has confirmed that the DPR will be developed keeping the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor in mind to ensure seamless integration between all key transport modes.

With this ambitious project, Mumbai continues to solidify its position as India’s infrastructure powerhouse, blending speed, connectivity, and modern engineering into one grand vision for the future.
