Ahmedabad Traffic Cop Slaps Woman During Vehicle Check; Outrage Erupts, Mevani Demands Action

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: A shocking incident unfolded in Ahmedabad when a traffic police officer allegedly slapped a woman during a routine vehicle check. The incident, caught on video, has sparked widespread outrage. While Congress leader Jignesh Mevani has demanded strict action, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik has acknowledged the incident and promised investigation.

Incident Details:

The victim, Bansri Manish Thakkar, residing in Vasan, reported that on the evening of 19th December at around 6:30 PM, she was crossing the signal near Char Rasta when a traffic officer stopped her and asked for her license. After handing over her license, she requested to move aside, which allegedly angered the officer. The officer reportedly slapped her when her ID card fell to the ground, and also verbally abused her. Bansri further alleged that help from emergency services (112) was not forthcoming, and the police station initially refused to file her FIR. Eventually, a complaint was recorded late at night.

Mevani Condemns the Act:

Outraged by the incident, Congress leader Jignesh Mevani took to social media, stating that watching such treatment of women by police officers is “blood-boiling.” He criticized the officer for turning a simple mistake—dropping an ID card—into an act of violence, questioning whether the role of the police is to protect citizens or assault them.

Demand for Justice:

Mevani demanded immediate FIR registration, arrest, and strict punishment for the officer involved. He emphasized that this is not just an attack on one woman but an assault on the dignity of all women in Gujarat. “We will not tolerate hooliganism in uniform. Justice must be delivered promptly,” he said.

Police Response:

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik has taken cognizance of the matter and assured that appropriate action will be taken after investigating the incident.
