From Humble Beginnings to IPL Riches: Pathum Nissanka’s Inspiring Journey

Sri Lanka’s rising star and opener, Pathum Nissanka, has been acquired by Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2026 auction for a hefty ₹4 crore. This marks Nissanka’s debut season in the Indian Premier League, giving him a platform to showcase his talent alongside the world’s best players.

Outstanding White-Ball Form

Nissanka has been in sensational form across white-ball cricket. In 2024, he scored 694 runs in One-Day Internationals at an average above 63, including a brilliant century. His T20 performances in 2025 have been equally impressive, accumulating 625 runs in 18 matches at an average of 36.76 and a strike rate of nearly 150, including a T20I century. In the ILT20 tournament, he has also excelled, scoring 226 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of over 191, featuring three half-centuries. Over his T20 career of 154 matches, Nissanka has amassed 4,293 runs, including two centuries, making him a proven match-winner in the shortest format.

From Poverty to IPL Fortunes

Nissanka’s journey from poverty to millions in the IPL is truly inspiring. Born into a financially constrained family, his father Sunil worked as a groundsman at Galle Cricket Ground, assisting with grass-cutting and pitch preparation, while his mother earned a living selling flowers outside a temple. Today, their son has emerged as one of the highest-valued newcomers in the world’s biggest cricket league.

Delhi Capitals are banking on Nissanka to strengthen their top order with his aggressive and consistent batting. Beyond runs, he gains invaluable exposure, playing alongside global stars and learning in high-pressure situations—a remarkable story of talent, perseverance, and hard work paying off on the grandest stage.
